sewing

I went to the Enrichment sewing class today. I made myself a apron to use when cooking! Yippee! I was so excited. I only did this because my Grandma Riding had a serious apron collection and when she died I never got any of them, but I am the 4th granddaughter on the Riding side. So now I am starting my own collection.

Grandma's letter

So recently, my Uncle Phil recieved an old letter from my Grandma Jensen to her family. Maybe I should back up. My Grandpa served in the Eastern Canada mission when Pearl Harbor happened. When he went back after WW2 for a vacation guess who was there...yep, Grandma was serving in the same mission. So my Grandma had to write home and tell her parents she was engaged. By the way, Grandpa was from Monticello, Utah and Grandma was from Sterling, Alberta. The letter that is my favorite is the one Grandma sent to her family after she recieved a letter from her family annoucing she was engaged. She was using words and terms that came straight out of Mayberry.

  • "He's really an ideal fellow, Mother, just the kind of a fellow you'd want me to marry."
  • "Quinn said his mother always made them help with the housework so he'll make somebody a lovely wife." Which is true, Grandpa did a lot of housework.
  • "He's such a swell fellow."
  • "Honestly, he's the grandest person."
  • "That would surely be swell."

I can't believe that people really did talk like that. Grandma Jensen died of cancer in January 1980. The letter sounds just like her only younger.

Brock

(Brock and new baby Drew)
So it turns out my cousin Kristin's husband Brock has a blog about the Utah Jazz. And now they are going to be on the radio commenting on the Jazz. Go Brock!

The Day After the Fire

This is the trailer that the neighbor lives in.

Yes, that is old cars and tractors, etc. A true Redneck joke.

This is the part of the street that we would light fireworks when I was a kid. We never set fire to the neighbor's property. We heard that it was teenagers that started the fires.

If you look behind the 3 trees, that is the diesel barrel that they were trying to prevent from exploding. Thank you firemen.

When the horizontal tree fell, all the ash and sparks almost landed on our house.

And yes the neighborhood still smells like smoke. It's really nasty.

The Fire

I had fallen asleep after all the days activities and my Mom wakes me up about 10:30pm and says there is a fire across the street. So I took some pictures.

This is the side of the main fire truck.

It was much closer than the picture shows. The police said the horses ran away in time to not to get burned.

Yes, the whole neighborhood was out on the corner until the police moved us back, then told us to get inside because weird stuff was burning. Then they told us there was a tank full of diesel fuel.

And yes, it was that smokey! The bear did not show up. LOL
